Day 1

I just completed another class at the International Center of Photography. Unlike my first class, this was an intensive, one-week course. At times I felt like I was in Bravo’s “Work Of Art”, having to generate and process very good pictures in a very limited amount of time with no knowledge of the subject of the exercise. Personally, I found that aspect a bit frustrating, not getting the types of images I would have ultimately wanted, but that’s to be expected in this type of classroom atmosphere. Still, I had a great time once again. These were my favorite images from day one…

Third Birthday Party

At my niece’s third birthday party, a spontaneous concert broke with her and her one brother. They did stirring renditions of… something… on their toy guitars and headset microphones. It was classic. My nephew is a rock star in the waiting. Seriously.

Yesterday morning I had the pleasure of experiencing my first “kindie” rock show at Madison Square Park. For several years now, my friend Jeff Bogle has been the brains behind his successful children’s website, Out With The Kids. Once upon a time, Jeff ran a music label called Mindwalk Records and has parlayed his love for independent music into the world of children’s music, DVD’s, toys, books and culture. For years, he has been touting the music of many wonderful kindie bands to me and asked me to come along and check out a performance by the local Brooklyn band, The Dirty Sock Funtime Band. What an absolute treat! Catchy melodies, fantastic musicianship and a killer performance made me forget I was at a children’s show. (Jeff recapped the show on OWTK along with a link to the rest of the photographs I took.) Like a lot of the kindie music Jeff exposes me to, this band crafts songs where, if you did not tell me it was directed towards children, I would just assume they were a quirky adult band like They Might Be Giants. (Not surprisingly, TMBG have become stars in the kindie music world with their own brand of children’s music.) And while I do not have children of my own, I am really looking forward to attending more live performances in the future of these like-minded musicians. I raise a glass (of milk) to you all you kindie rockers out there.

Hi Hooooo! Ogunquit!

My wife and I just returned from a fantastic couple days in the glorious state of Maine. No matter how many times I’ve been there, it never ceases to amaze me how incredibly beautiful it is. I knew we would be staying close to the beach, so my goal was to wake up at dawn to catch the sunrise, christen my new tripod and capture as many pristine scenes as I could. The plan went off without a hitch (even with a night of getting acquainted with many of Maine’s locally crafted brews) and I came back to the house after about three hours and couldn’t have been happier. Not only was I completely satisfied with the results, but the whole experience of waking up with the sun on a completely deserted beach (except for that one random jogger at 4:30 AM), a vacuum-like experience of sound, and the sense of being a million miles away, in body and mind, from Manhattan, was absolutely divine.

That and the lobster rolls.

The rest of my photographs from Maine can be found here on my Flickr page.
